NASA's Artemis III mission is set to launch astronauts into low Earth orbit in 2027, marking a significant milestone in the agency's ambitious lunar exploration program. This mission, which will be the second crewed flight of the Artemis program, aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon. Despite not actually flying to the Moon, Artemis III will be a crucial stepping stone in NASA's lunar landing architecture.
The preparations for Artemis III are well underway, with components of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket coming together at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. The SLS core stage, connected with the rocket's engine block section, and the first two of the core stage's four RS-25 engines have arrived and are being installed. The solid rocket boosters (SRBs) are also being mounted on the mobile launch platform, with the upper segments undergoing inspection and testing.
Inside KSC's Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building, the Artemis III Orion spacecraft is making significant progress. Engineers have completed the installation of the spacecraft's heat shield, featuring design improvements gleaned from the Artemis I mission. The service module has also completed acoustic testing and is being prepared for joining with the Orion capsule.
The Artemis III team at KSC has begun monthly launch simulation tests to refine procedures for SLS propellant loading, terminal count operations, and launch day operations. These tests will continue regularly leading up to the mission's launch next year.
Looking ahead, NASA is also preparing for the program's first lunar landing, planned for Artemis IV in late 2028. The SLS core stage for this mission is currently in production, with the liquid oxygen (LOX) tank recently relocated for testing. This mission will deliver a crew of astronauts to the Moon's surface for the first time since 1972.
